Get Rid of Mice with Mothballs?!

One of the most frequently recommended home remedies to get rid of mice is to strategically place mothballs around the house. The theory is that the sensitive noses on mice will detect the smell, one which they don't like, and they won't return to the scene. Does it work? The short answer is yes. The longer answer is yes, it will work, but the smell may chase out you and your family too!

One thing to keep in mind before you buy a bunch of mothballs and throw them everywhere is that mothballs are toxic. If you have pets, or even worse, young children that like to put everything in their mouths - you're not going to want to use this home remedy to get rid of mice. I mentioned the smell already, and that is why they deter mice but it's not only an unpleasant smell for mice, it's an unpleassant smell for you as well. I'm not telling you to avoid the use of mothballs to deter mice. I'm telling you to use this method where it makes sense.

Where should you put mothballs to get rid of mice? Do it somewhere that you're not going to spend a lot of time in. Don't put it in your kitchen. Try putting it in your garage, unfinished basement, or attic. Put it in places where human traffic is virtually zero or limited to infrequent short durations.

If you're looking to get rid of mice in a high traffic area that is frequented by humans or pets try one of my personal favorite home remedies to get rid of mice: Peppermint oil. The premise is the same as with mothballs, but the smell of peppermint oil is much more appealing to humans.
