How to Get Rid of Fire Ants: "Texas Two Step"
Getting rid of fire ants can be a tall task for even the most experienced exterminator. That's why professors and college students out of Texas A&M University developed a method to effectively deal with an ant infestation problem. It's called the "Texas Two Step." It is a long term ant control mechanism that doesn't make use of any harmful chemicals, but should keep your yard ant free when followed properly. Step one of this process is known as broadcasting. It involves the use of a non-toxic bait insecticide that should be spread around the affected areas to include the ant hills and food sources. The ants will take this bait back into the nest where it gets introduced into the general ant population. Eventually the queen will eat the bait, and she will become infertile or die. Without the queen laying her eggs, the ant population will no longer expand. It is important to ensure that if there are multiple nests that all of the nests have ready access to this bait insecticide. This first step should be done during the period of high foraging activity during the summer or early fall before food sources become more scarce during the winter months. Step two is meant to rid your lawn of ants that weren't killed by step one's bait insecticide. In step two you apply organic liquid insecticide to each and every mound to kill the remainder of ants. This part of the process is known as drenching because you're drenching the nests. To apply this step you take the liquid insecticide and liberally pour it over each nest. An alternative drenching liquid is boiling water though this is not recommended as it has the tendency to damage the plant life in the area. Additionally the boiling water may not completely kill all of the ants in the nest as the water begins to cool before it reaches the deepest chambers of the ant nest. The key to getting rid of ants using this process is to ensure that both steps are applied to all nests. Many fire ant nests reside under logs or in places that are hidden from plain sight. It's imperative that the solution is applied to all nests otherwise the surviving nest will just grow and multiply the next season. |
